- Exchanges: The South Dakota legislature has not considered any bills to create a state-run exchange. South Dakota convened a Health Insurance Exchange Task Force, which met during 2011 and issued a final report and recommendations in November. The task force did not issue a recommendation on whether South Dakota should operate a state-run exchange.
- Essential Health Benefits: South Dakota has not recommended an EHB benchmark.
- Medicaid Expansion: Governor Dennis Daugaard said in December that he does not plan to participate in the Medicaid expansion.
- Medicare Advantage Enrollment: South Dakota currently has 9,142 seniors and people with disabilities enrolled in Medicare Advantage, or about 6% of all Medicare beneficiaries.
