AHIP Launches New Health Care Spending iPad App
New Interactive App Highlights Key Drivers of Health Care Spending
Washington, D.C. – How much is the country projected to spend on health care in 2020? What are the biggest drivers of health care spending growth? What percent of the federal budget is spent on Medicare and Medicaid? How much does spending on health plan administrative costs contribute to increases in health care spending?
These are just a few of the questions that can be answered by downloading a new interactive iPad app developed by America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP). The new app, “U.S. Health Care Spending 101,” provides policymakers and stakeholders with comprehensive health care spending data in an easy-to-use digital format.
“Rising health care costs are crushing our economy, making it harder for individuals and small businesses to afford coverage, and crowding out spending on other urgent national priorities,” said AHIP President and CEO Karen Ignagni.
The new iPad app consolidates 50 years of data from the Congressional Budget Office, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, and the Office of Management and Budget into a series of simple, interactive charts.
App users can view historical and projected health care spending data at the national level, state-by-state, on a per capita basis, or as a percent of GDP. The app also provides a detailed breakdown of how much the nation is spending on different aspects of the health care system, such as hospital care, physician services, prescription drugs, and health plan administrative costs, and how each of these components contributes to health care cost growth.
“The national health care cost debate needs to be based on real data about what is driving the rise in health care spending,” Ignagni said. “This new app provides policymakers and stakeholders with one-stop-shopping for health care cost data.”
